Research and Development: The Backbone of HydrogenPro

Our foremost source of pride stems from the advancements in developing cutting-edge high-pressure alkaline electrolyzers. Our electrode technology positions us as a globally cost-competitive entity.

State-of-the-Art Research Centers

We operate research centers in Denmark (Aarhus) and Norway (Porsgrunn), with a focus on the continuous innovation of electrolyzer technology. Our goal is to enhance energy efficiency, reliability, and productivity for customers worldwide.

Ensuring Electrode Integrity

Preserving electrode integrity during operations is crucial. HydrogenPro addresses this through advanced alkaline electrolysis R&D test capabilities. Our pilot factory is designed for meticulous testing under real-world conditions, allowing for expeditious assessments. This facility is pivotal in producing next-generation, highly efficient electrodes for HydrogenPro’s green hydrogen electrolyzers globally.

Expanding Production Capacity

In June 2024, we announced an investment in a new production line for Gen3 electrodes with an annual capacity of 90-100 MW. This new line will quadruple our production capacity of large electrodes, underscoring our commitment to innovation and scalability.

Global Collaboration and Expertise

Our R&D department focuses on the development and commercialization of high-pressure alkaline electrolyzer technologies. Collaborating with our counterparts in China, our research centers assemble an international team of exceptionally skilled scientists. Our primary research mandate revolves around cultivating high-performance anodes and cathodes with extended lifespans.

Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) Strategy

Our developmental endeavors and outcomes are safeguarded through the meticulous application of patents, copyrights, and other pertinent intellectual property protections, aligning with our comprehensive Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) strategy.

R&D Team

The R&D department comprises a dynamic team of researchers, designers, and students spanning the spectrum from bachelor’s to Ph.D. levels. The inclusion of students in our R&D projects reflects our commitment to fostering educational development and innovation.

Leadership in R&D: Dr. Odd-Arne Lorentsen

Leading the R&D team is Dr. Odd-Arne Lorentsen, who holds a Ph.D. and MSc in technical electrochemistry. From pioneering research on green aluminum during his Ph.D. to influential roles as Chief Engineer and CTO of several energy-related companies, Odd-Arne has consistently championed the cause of the energy transition. He has also served as an Adjunct Professor in Electrolysis Technology at NTNU. With 20 years of experience in technology leadership roles, he brings invaluable insights to HydrogenPro.

Pinnacle of Efficiency - Electrodes

The vision of HydrogenPro Denmark is the meticulous development and fabrication of the most efficient electrodes for alkaline electrolysis. This vision encompasses the establishment of production facilities, in-house R&D, and testing infrastructure, along with the cultivation of national and international R&D collaborations. Having completed the initial phase, we are currently in the expansion stage, supported by several granted projects with cumulative budgets reaching 13 MEUR by Q4 2023.

A noteworthy outcome of HydrogenPro’s research initiatives is the successful visualization of hydrogen and oxygen gas distribution within operational alkaline electrolysis cells. This breakthrough facilitates further optimization of electrode properties used in HydrogenPro’s alkaline electrolyzer units.

Our commitment to advancing alkaline electrolysis R&D test capabilities is evident through the construction of new test facilities in Aarhus. This expansion serves to fortify our testing capabilities. Subsequently, upon the successful documentation of new electrodes, rigorous testing will be conducted at the 100-200 kW level in our two container-size test units at Herøya in Porsgrunn, Norway.

University collaboration

Engaging in R&D projects, HydrogenPro collaborates with over ten leading universities and research institutions in Europe. These collaborations aim to establish robust research networks, expedite technology development, and streamline the transition of basic ideas into viable products and innovative solutions. This collaborative effort also plays a pivotal role in talent acquisition and training initiatives.
